School times, one of the best stages in life...

Who could forget school times? Times in which you met great friendships and experienced frustration, disillusionment and deception but above all, you learnt life lessons you never thought you could learn. This photo is one of the best memories I had in my second year of high school.

I studied and graduated at “María Angélica Idrobo” high school in the north of Quito, this high school is also known as “MAI” for its acronym and its red uniform. I still remember that we had to prepare a presentation about the traditional sweets of sierra Andes region of Ecuador. That`s the reason why there is a table with many traditional sweets from Quito, Loja and Ambato.

My group consisted of 4 members, but only 2 of them (including me) are in the photo. The girl who is coughing and the boy with the notebook are from other groups that came to see what my group was doing. Out table was the one with most traditional sweets. Therefore, our “area” smelled delicious. Among the traditional sweets we had “los chimborazos” (vanilla cupcakes covered with powdered sugar), the famous “melcochas”, “espumilla”, “aplanchados”, peanut nougats and many more. All my classmates wanted us to give them at least one of the candies since my group had a lot. However, we couldn´t give them the candies because the idea was to give all the candies to the teacher but later, we changed our minds.

After the presentation, my group decided to share all the candies with the teacher and the class. At the beginning, I was so disappointed because my classmates were stealing some candies, that`s why I look like I´m scolding them in the photo. As I said before, I am a really patient girl but when people abuse that patience and cross the line, I get really mad and “freak out”. The good thing is that after that a few minutes later my anger is gone and I am the same “chill” girl again.

This photo is not just about a high school memory, it is more than that. In that day I felt like I was the mom of the class because I was in charge of handing out all the candies to each of my classmates. At the end everyone ate candies, except me. But I didn't feel bad about it, on the contrary, it was a beautiful experience because all I wanted to do was to hand out the candies to each one of them as if they were my children. This may sound weird but all my classmates have told me that I have that maternal spirit…
